Port Alberni has always had a pretty strong Faith based Homeschool community. However, when the founder of the Port Alberni Homeschool group began looking locally for families many of the families had children who aged out of (or were close to aging out of) school.
Although her child was enrolled in Heritage Christian School, she hoped to start a group that encouraged diversity and welcomed families from a variety of faith and cultural backgrounds.
Karrine, is still part of the group which has moved to a Facebook platform. “Hopefully, more families will step up to help create more opportunities for our homeschooling families in the Alberni Valley, but until then we still support one another and post local happenings and resources on our Facebook group.”
The group has just over 100 members with families utilizing a variety of homeschool options including; unschooling, Distance Learning Programs, and a combination of homeschool and public school.
“I am excited about SNAPS, and Kathleen’s mission to provide more resources for families that provide the individualized options inclusive of siblings and which Distance School you may be registered with. Homeschooling can be lonely and community is important” -Karrine
